The MD's Personal Profile
Age: 40 Company: Semantico Limited Role: Managing Director Sector: Software Development / Publishing Services Website: http://www.semantico.com When did you first decide to go into business? I freelanced for five years before setting up Semantico in 1999. Best job? Worst job? My best job is running Semantico. Worst job? No comment. What's your strongest attribute? Belief that I know the right answers. What's your weakest link? Sometimes I worry too much about being nice to everyone. Do you live to work or work to live? I live to live. Work is just part of that. What's the wisest thing anyone in business has told you? I've scratched my head for this one. And I didn't come up with anything memorable. What do you love about working in Brighton? I love being able to walk to work and I love being able to go out to eat at lunch time. What do you hate about working in Brighton? The price of office space. Who are you most likely to share a business problem with? My team. What's been your biggest achievement in business? Realising that I wanted to run the company and then making that happen. And your biggest disaster? We lost a big contract and we had to think hard about what our clients were saying to us. What's your main source of news? Outsell Insights service. Most useful web site? Web site? Ha, that'll be Google :-) How important is new media to your business? I don't think I ever use that phrase, as I think it means many things to many people. Why did so many dot.com companies bomb? Folks forgot about the market. You can build the fastest sports car you like, but it won't run without fuel. If you shared a short lift ride with a DTI minister, what would you tell them? Make
things easier for the small guys. I love going to my local shops and I
hate to think that they'll all close and I'd have to go to Tesco
instead. How do you relax? Running and playing my guitar. What stops you sleeping? Thinking about work is normally pretty effective. How would you like colleagues to think of you? That's a hard question. And I don't think I can say more than that. What would be your personal business motto? Never stop learning.
